The Yours Truly Collection: Jewelry by Tu Creations
Tu Creations is a custom, sustainable jewelry shop owned, designed, and operated by Melissa Tu. The fourth-year design student specializing in jewelry design at the Pratt Institute designs and hand makes all of the jewelry herself. Born in China, Melissa moved to Vancouver when she finished elementary school. Growing up in both China and Canada gave Melissa a new perspective on urban life and nature, and this idea would go on to serve as the inspiration for her newest collection: The Yours Truly Collection.
The Yours Truly Collection features four unique pieces: The Yours Truly Necklace, the Its Love Earrings, Custom Earrings with Gem Stones, and the Yours Truly Ring. All of the distinct parts of her jewelry are made with a variety of natural resources, and she uses different techniques with silver metal to capture different textures.
Because Tu is a sustainable designer, she aims to spread awareness about the environment and encourage sustainable practices through her art. The Yours Truly Collection was created to voice a distinct perspective about the way we as humans are damaging our environment, and the idea for this collection was directly inspired by the pandemic as a starting point for that conversation. Due to the halting of many industries right now, the environment has begun to respond to our decrease in damage. Tu remarked how this occurrence has now placed us in a unique position. Instead of following the continued destruction of nature, which in Tu’s opinion, brings us further from freedom, Tu remarks that we are in a place now where we are “trying to rebuild a new dialogue with nature. We are in a revolution for change, and I really hope this helps people find the true values of life.”
When asked about what she wants people to learn from and take away from her collection, Tu’s answer was simple: “I want people to re-evaluate and re-examine their behavior towards sustainable living, and I want people to realize how our actions have affected our lives. I want us to work toward rebuilding our relationship with nature.”
So what’s next for Melissa and Tu Creations? “I really want to bring more layers to this concept. The urban setting is a collection of all kinds of people from different backgrounds and classes. This is a subject we should all be working on, so I want to make that relatable to everyone”.
