Fashionable Politics: How Diet Prada Emphasizes The intersection of style and politics

To those not familiar with the world of fashion, politics is the last topic that one might associate with a community who is up to date with the latest runway trends. Many still see fashion as a shallow, self-fullied, pretentious hobby that occupies the wealthy. On the contrary, the fashion industry is a growing place where more diverse figures are paving the way and garnering their well deserved recognition. But with change comes the reveal of the disturbing skeletons hiding in the closets of the fashion industry’s biggest household names. Figures and fashion houses like Alexander Wang, Dolce and Gabbana, and Peter Nygard are all examples of those who have been exposed for the despicable, deplorable, and sometimes completely illegal acts that they thought they could get away with. Popular internet pages like the famed Diet Prada (@diet_prada on Instagram) bring the news to fashion consumers in an effort to hold these big brand names accountable.

Some think fashion and pages like Diet Prada have no place talking about politics, with some followers telling them to “stay in their lane and focus on fashion”. But Diet Prada is nowhere near slowing down on producing political content, with two of their most recent posts talking about the lack of response from the fashion community regarding the uprise of Asian hate crimes, as well as the unjust death of Angelo Quinto at the hands of police brutality. While they built their brand on catty and witty posts about the latest fashion trends, the page also gracefully incorporates posts about the necessary and uncomfortable conversations that are well overdue in the fashion community.

Many don’t realize how intertwined fashion and politics are. Fashion and what people (especially people in the public eye) choose to wear or buy from makes a huge public impression. It is the reason why the designers who dress the First Ladies make headlines and why celebrities choose certain designers to wear; it’s all an effort to relay a wordless message about the issues they support. All of this being said, Diet Prada’s political conversations are not coming out of left field. They are capitalizing on the connection between these two subjects, which often goes unnoticed in the public eye. The fashion world has long been comfortable in its position and has largely ignored attempts of accountability. But with times changing and pages like Diet Prada making sure their voices are persistent and heard, the world of fashion has to get used to politics, backlash, and accountability.
