Minimalist Wardrobe Part 1: Back to Basics

In a world consumed by fast-fashion, consumers are becoming increasingly demanding: expecting low prices, convenience, and speed. Consumers also value trends, opting for clothing items that are low-quality and unethically produced. This leads to only wearing such things once or twice before deeming them as unwearable as they are out of style. Additionally, the fleeting nature of trends creates fluctuating consumer demand that is often difficult to predict, allowing mass overproduction in the fashion industry and creating excess waste and pollution.

While some brands are attempting to launch eco-friendly initiatives to offset some of the adverse effects of fast fashion, investing in and styling ethically sourced, high-quality basics in different ways can help sustainability efforts, as well as foster creativity in how we style our clothes. Here is a roundup of our favorite basics:

The White T-Shirt

The white t-shirt is a timeless and versatile piece that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Whether it’s worn underneath a blazer for a businesslike look, paired with sweatpants or jeans for a casual vibe, or placed underneath a dress to create a chic layered effect, you can never go wrong with this classic item.

The Button-Up Cardigan

A button-up cardigan is the perfect combination of comfort and style and can be layered with any top to provide warmth and add depth to an outfit. Mixing-and-matching different colored and patterned cardigans and experimenting with the neckline (e.g., wearing the cardigan off-the-shoulder during spring for a flirty look or under a coat during winter) create unique outfits, making the button-up cardigan a necessary addition to every wardrobe.

The Black Pants

Black pants are arguably one of the most fundamental basics needed in every wardrobe, as they are versatile, functional, and timeless. Offering a more sophisticated alternative to jeans, black pants can be paired with pretty much any top. They also help dress up any outfit while remaining understated, creating a bold, effortless look.

Heeled ankle boots can elevate an otherwise basic-looking outfit and make it elegant. Not only do they add a sleek statement, creating a model-off-duty look, but they are also extremely durable and comfortable, making them a great investment as they are functional and stylish.
