2020 certainly was a year for the books. Here, we are taking a moment to acknowledge the high points, honor those we lost, and embrace the unprecedented in a look back at the year’s events through trends.

On January 26, 2020, we lost legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant, along with daughter Gianna, in a helicopter crash. We honor Bryant’s legacy through the striking purple and gold of the LA Lakers. These colors are the perfect way to honor Bryant’s bright spirit and keep his memory alive.

South Korean director Bong Joon Ho made history when his film Parasite was the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 92nd Oscars in February. Along with being a killer movie, the fashion in the film is impeccable. One huge takeaway from the film is the use of minimalist chic pieces to put together timeless and classy looks - just the revamp all of our business casual looks need.

What better way to honor Netflix’s Tiger King than with animal print and earth tones? Channel your inner Carole Baskin or Joe Exotic (at your own risk) with the perfect muted oranges and greens, corduroys, and cheetah prints to get in the big cat mood.

By the time April came around, quarantine was a regular part of all of our lives. With all of us being cooped up inside, many of our fancier outfits seemed to be going to waste. This is especially true given the way quarantine has persisted in 2021. Take this as your reminder that you don’t have to leave the house to dress up! Put some pep in your step and dress to the nines to go about your household chores - give “laundry day” a whole new meaning.

You can’t talk about 2020 without talking about TikTok. The ‘Wipe It Down’ challenge took the app by storm in May, with users flaunting their best casual and fancy outfits in one video. This challenge is open to so many interpretations. At its core, it shows that you can bounce between casual and dressy with ease, but you could also take it to a different level and combine your comfy styles with your fancier ones. Sweatpants and heels anyone??

Cottagecore took the internet by storm in June, with so many of us wishing for the simplicity that a cottage in the forest brings. While most of us can’t escape to a cabin in a field, you can channel your nature-needs with florals, greens, and flowiness. Take this as your sign to find your nearest meadow and frolic for a bit.

With Avatar: The Last Airbender taking Netflix by storm in 2020, many of us were transported back to our childhoods when we aspired to be just like Aang and his crew, and that sentiment still remains. I mean, how comfortable do their pants look? Athleisure trends can help you get one step closer to the Benders’ vibe, keeping you ready for anything.

Many of 2020’s styles also formed opposing counterparts to go along with them. In August, we saw the rise of both edgy, baggy, dark looks, but also soft, light, flowy and cute personas to balance them out. These two vibes are great because you can switch up your look depending on your mood for the day, or even try to form them into one look with different combinations of pieces and patterns. A personal favorite of mine is to combine chunky, edgy accessories with softer, lighter clothes. One way you could do this is by combining oversized sunglasses, lots of thick necklaces, and bold boots or sneakers with a light, delicate floral dress to perfectly capture both aesthetics in one.

September

On September 18, 2020, society mourned the loss of powerhouse Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Ginsberg was a legendary force on the Supreme Court and fought tirelessly for women’s rights and equality throughout her career. We can honor Ginsberg’s classiness and grace in our everyday style by incorporating a unique collar or jabot to embody her elegance and regality.

October

The fall chill of October brought on a unique spin on ways to wear your sweaters and sweatshirts. Crewnecks rose to popularity again, with many including a turtleneck or oversized collar popping up from underneath to revamp the look. This can also be done with your favorite sweater or sweater vest and is the perfect way to dress up your cozier quarantine looks or add a little bit of preppiness to your everyday style. This is definitely a trend that will continue to have its moment this winter.

November

Feeding off of October’s preppiness, November gave way to the dark academia aesthetic, combining the collared trends of the previous month with dark blacks, purples, blues, and greens along with thicker sweaters, coats, and pants to transition us from fall to winter. Including different variations of plaid or checker can help set this look apart.

December

What better way to bundle up than with your favorite faux leather trench coat? If that’s not your style, you can also opt for the puffer jacket, which definitely made its comeback in December 2020. Obviously, jackets and coats of all types rise in popularity in the colder months, but these are two types that have been taking recent street style by storm. These pieces are perfect for tying a look together and can be completed with the ultimate micro sunglasses for a great on-the-go look.

While many of us want to leave 2020 behind us, these trends and aesthetics are definitely things that we should keep going into 2021. All of them offer the space for reworking or interpretation, and can easily be elevated or taken in new directions. We will certainly be keeping tabs on how these looks evolve in 2021!
