The Best Dressed at The 2020 Academy Awards
The biggest night in Hollywood happened this past weekend right here in Los Angeles, and it truly was a historic show. Almost all of the nominees for best picture took home at least one Oscar, but the big winner was Parasite, winning Best International Feature, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture. The South Korean film made history by becoming the first foreign language film to ever win Best Picture.
While the Awards part of the show was a success, I would say the Red Carpet was as well. Here are some of the best dressed at this year’s Oscars.
Renee Zellweger

Renee took home the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role as Judy Garland in Judy. Her sleek and simple one-shouldered Armani gown is on brand with her record of slaying in neutral tones.
Janelle Monae

Every time Janelle Monae walks a Red Carpet I think she can’t possibly outdo her most previous look, and I am always wrong. Janelle shined in Ralph Lauren, but honestly we should have expected nothing less.
Natalie Portman

We all know that capes are in, but Natalie Portman stood out in more ways than one in her custom Dior ensemble. Not only was her draping gown and cape ensemble just show stoppingly gorgeous, but it also had the names of all of the female directors snubbed from a nomination this year embroidered on the hem. Queen.

Cynthia Erivo pretty much 100% of the time stuns in whatever she wears, and this time was no different. In custom Versace, the actress nominated for two awards looked magical in what I think is one of my favorite looks of hers yet (and that is saying something).

Timothee could show up wearing pretty much anything and we will always swoon. Wearing Prada, the actor ditched the traditional tuxedo and went a less traditional (and more comfortable?) route. Timothee, we are here for it.

Margot Robbie went with an elegant yet understated Chanel gown. Although she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bombshell, she was not expected to win, so her minimalist yet sophisticated gown was arguably one of the most chic looks of the night.
Scarlett Johansson

Nominated for both Best Actress in a Leading Role as well as in a Supporting Role in two films nominated for Best Picture (Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit) Scarlett Johansson had a big night, so it was only fitting she had a magnificent dress to stand out in. Sporting Oscar de la Renta to both the Academy Awards and the Vanity Fair After Party, Johansson glowed all night despite not winning in either category she was nominated in.
There were many ensembles that shined last Sunday, but for me, these were the standouts. A general theme of the night was a tendency toward darker and more neutral tones, as bold color pops were almost nowhere to be seen. There was also a good amount of glitter and asymmetry, but for the most part the color scheme stayed pretty true to white, black, and gray. If I had to characterize the night’s overarching trend in one phrase, I would call it “bold yet classic”.
