5 trends from 5 decades for your NYE outfit inspo
While we won’t be ringing in the new year as we normally would, that doesn’t mean our outfits have to sacrifice! Even though I’ll be welcoming 2021 in my childhood home with my parents, I think the perfect outfit will add a sense of normalcy to the occasion. Here are 5 trends from 5 decades to help you get inspired for your NYE looks:
60s: Leopard
Leopard has been having a moment for the past couple years, and it is the perfect pattern to dress up simple outfits. A pop of leopard in an accessory like a headband or a belt can tie together a look. The pattern adds sass to any outfit and is a perfect way to add a little umph to everything. You could even take a lesson from Elizabeth Taylor and go all out, rocking the pattern head to toe.
70s: Jumpsuits
Jumpsuits are another trend that has made a comeback in recent years. These are great because they are comfortable and simple, and there are so many different paths you can go down with one. I’d be remiss if I didn’t include Cher’s iconic 1974 Met Gala jumpsuit when talking about this. The sparkle. The feathers. The drama. In my opinion, the perfect NYE look. I mean, who wouldn’t want to strut around in an ensemble like that, even if you are only going from your bedroom to the living room.
80s: Shoulder pads
Okay, hear me out. As blazers have found their place in the fashion world outside of office apparel, shoulder pads are the obvious next step. They add volume and exaggeration to outfits that creates a very dramatic effect. If it’s a trend you’ve been considering but aren’t sold on, what better time to try it than in the comfort of your own home? Grace Jones is a shoulder pad icon that you can easily look to for guidance tackling this style.
90s: Matching sets
Matching sets are awesome because they come in so many different styles: long skirt, short skirt, pants, shorts, crop tops, long sleeves, turtlenecks - your possibilities are endless. Take a lesson from Jada Pickett-Smith and add some glimmer and sparkle to your look for the perfect festive fit.
2000s: Sweatsuits
And lastly, if none of this is your speed and you just want to spend the holiday chilling in sweats, look no further than the iconic Juicy Couture sweatsuit made famous by Paris Hilton. The sweatsuit has been making an obvious comeback in quarantine, and if velour isn’t your thing, opt for a tie-dye or bleach dye suit - you can even get crafty and make it yourself!
Looking back at the origins of these trends that made a comeback in 2020 can help bring new life to them and add a new spin, which is a great way to welcome 2021. Whatever outfit you choose to rock on NYE, be safe and enjoy, and we can’t wait to see what the new year will bring!
