From Carrie Bradshaw to Emily Cooper: The Uphill climb To Become A T.V Fashion Icon
When we think of TV’s most iconic fashion stars, many might point to the nanny from Queens Fran Fine, Upper East Side’s Blaire Waldorf, or Cookie Lyon of Empire Records. Although all of these women are fictional style icons in their own right, none of them really compare to the powerhouse and trend setter that is Carrie Bradshaw. She and her girls who made the city of New York their playground, in the process also took the fashion world by storm and provided inspiration for the youth of the early 2000’s. Now, the duo behind Sex in The City fame, Patricia Field and Darren Star, have teamed up again to see if luck strikes twice and find out if they can bring a new fashion icon to life for the youthful masses. And the next Carrie Bradshaw to be is… Emily Cooper?
Now whether you loved Emily In Paris, hated it, or even loved to hate it so much that you binged the whole season, there is no denying that the show tried to make a statement through fashion. But, many outfits seem to miss the mark. Whether it was the overuse of berets (seriously, SO. MANY. BERETS) or the constant reminder that she was in Paris through her clothing, it seemed that they were dressing Emily to be loud for loud’s sake. Perhaps it was to show the affray of Parisian and American fashion (a battle that was not in Emily’s favour) or to mimic the often boldly lavish style choices of her predecessor, Carrie Bradshaw. Regardless, it seems that Emily’s narrative, to be the spunky, outspoken woman in charge, went a bit overboard in the clothing department. She speaks for herself, and her clothes should merely elevate her, rather than do the talking for her.
This is not to say that all of Emily’s outfits were total misfires. Some of Emily’s stunning fashion moments happen to be some of her simplest. Her white Pierre Cadault dress from episode 9, her grown up little black dress moment from episode 6, and her edgy fuchsia two piece from episode 4 are three of her most sleek ensembles. All of these outfits find the balance between effortless and striking. These are outfits that showcase Emily’s unique interpretation of the Paris fashion scene, as well as highlight her style outside of being the “American in Paris” girl.
Now, were any of Emily’s fashion choices this season as iconic as say, Carrie’s opening, nipple baring outfit? No, not quite. But did Carrie Bradshaw also make mistakes? Absolutely! This is also to say that the wonderful thing about fashion is that it is subjective. And oftentimes, many of the most controversial looks become the most talked about in later years. So, I would say that Emily has the makings of one of TV’s fashion superstars… just maybe a few less berets next season.
