Coachella's Increasing Inclusivity throughout the years

Although, today, Coachella is an iconic desert festival that features a wide array of artists ranging from various backgrounds and appearances, it took some time to get here. In reality, Coachella initially appealed to a more white demographic.

Black artists have been featured in the general lineup throughout Coachella history. However, it was not until Prince headlined in 2008 at Coachella, that the festival had a black artist as a headliner. Furthermore, it was not until the renowned 2018 “Beychella,” that a black female artist headlined. To begin her set, Beyonce sang the “Negro National Anthem,” shedding light and power on black listeners, who had been overlooked at Coachella for too long. Her entire performance was so impactful that it is the most viewed performance on Youtube Livestream, and has since been featured in Beyonce’s feature film, “Homecoming.” With more than 43.1 million views, Beyonce’s change to the Coachella status quo magically captured the attention of people form 232 different countries! Furthermore, the black demographic of ticket-buyers increased dramatically.

Since then, Coachella has taken measures to increase its inclusivity and sense of a welcoming community. On their website, one can access the steps that Goldenvoice has taken to develop an inclusive festival culture. Launching “Every One,” Goldenvoice asserts intolerance towards sexual harassment and discriminatory acts including, but not limited to, “homophobia, racism, sexism, or cultural appropriation.” Specific details can be accessed in the Code of Conduct, which claims that anyone violating such  policies will be immediately removed . Every One also encourages that attendees of Coachella hold themselves accountable for their actions. Under a section entitled, “Your Part,” the site urges respectful behavior such as being “respectful of other people’s cultures,” and “challeng(ing) yourself and peers to be more mindful.” To end this list, the site reminds viewers that “every one  deserves to be safe.”

Thankfully, Coachella has been in tandem with progression of modern social endeavors regarding inclusivity.
